PICU and ELMHS Stepping Stones move day

 In Latest News

On Wednesday 14 February we will be transferring patients in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Early in Life Mental Health Service (ELMHS) Stepping Stones from Monash Medical Centre to the new facilities at Monash Children’s Hospital.

Relocation of patients will commence at 8am and use internal passageways between Monash Medical Centre and the new PICU and ELMHS Stepping Stones facilities. The transfer of patients has been professionally planned and includes a range of precautions as well as security and safety checks.

During this time, please be aware of patient traffic flow and be vigilant for your safety and the safety and wellbeing of others.

All children under our care will be assessed by our doctors and nurses prior to transfer to ensure it is appropriate. They will then be accompanied by a team of clinicians, with support personnel in place along the transfer route. Emergency systems are in place along the way in the unlikely event that they are required, and upon arrival at the new facilities each child will be assessed again.

Many parents and carers choose to stay home or have a few hours away from the hospital during the busy transfer. If you’d prefer to do this we will call you once the transfer is complete.

The new PICU and ELMHS Stepping Stones facilities are purpose-built and we are looking forward to providing care in this dedicated state-of-the-art environment.

ELMHS Stepping Stones move

Commencing at 8am, patients will be accompanied by staff to the Northern Entrance of Monash Medical Centre, before turning right into Monash Children’s Hospital.

PICU move

Commencing at 8am, patients will be taken via the Yellow lifts to Level 5, where they will be taken along the link bridge into Monash Children’s Hospital.

The PICU team will speak with parents and carers on the day before the move. A parent or carer may be able to accompany each child during transfer. For some, however, we will ask you to move to the new building on Level 3 and wait at the new PICU. This will depend on the amount and complexity of equipment your child requires to be safe.

The new ELMHS Stepping Stones

The new Stepping Stones unit is located on Level 2 of the Monash Children’s Hospital, which is the same floor as the main entry.

Parking at Monash Children’s Hospital is through the same entry (off Clayton Road, into the multistorey car park). You may drive through the other side of the multistorey car park, following signs directing to Monash Children’s Hospital.

To reach the new Ward, walk straight in the main atrium, past the crocodile and lifts down the corridor to the left. At the end of the corridor, turn right. The unit entry is approximately 30 metres further down this corridor.

We look forward to welcoming you to our new, brighter, lighter facility.

The new PICU

The new PICU is located on Level 3 of the Monash Children’s Hospital.

Lifts are located in the main atrium of Monash Children’s Hospital. When you exit the lifts on level 3, PICU is to the right, and around a corner.

There are signs pointing to Ward 3B (Cocoon) PICU, which is past the Hoyts Beanbag Cinema.

PICU’s reception desk and doors are bright orange. We look forward to welcoming you in our new PICU!

Facilities for parents and carers

There are facilities for parents and carers throughout the hospital. Our parent lounge areas have microwaves, fridges to store food brought from home, tea and coffee facilities, and vending machines with ready-to-heat meals. Simply ask staff for locations.

Gigil Café in the main atrium is open from 6am – 7pm on weekdays and 6am – 6pm on weekends. Alternatively you can visit Zouki Café, located on Level 2 in Monash Medical Centre or Nesso Café, located on Level 2 in the Monash Health Translation Precinct (MHTP).

The Ronald McDonald House Family Room on Level 4 is also available for parents and carers seeking some quiet time.

After hours entry

For security reasons, entry to Monash Children’s Hospital between 9pm and 6am is via the Monash Medical Centre Emergency Department.
