The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Monash Children’s Hospital provides exceptional around the clock care for critically ill children including babies and adolescents.
Our state of the art 10-bed unit is staffed by highly trained doctors and nurses who specialise in intensive care and ensure the best possible outcomes for the sickest children in the hospital.
The unit is one of only two tertiary paediatric intensive care units in Victoria.
Children are admitted to the PICU for conditions that require life-support or an intensive level of nursing and medical care. Our young patients come from the emergency department, wards, operating theatres and at least one-third are transferred from other hospitals.
Most patients requiring intensive care are from the Monash Health catchment area of South Eastern Melbourne but others come from country Victoria and even interstate such as Tasmania and NSW.
Intensive care physicians, called intensivists, treat children in the PICU. They are paediatricians or anaesthetists with additional qualification in the field of intensive care (Fellowships of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand).
Our intensive care physicians also help provide intensive care training and education for other Monash Health staff as well as for medical and nursing students.
Many nurses working in paediatric intensive care at the hospital also have specialist training or qualifications in intensive care nursing.
A separate Monash Newborn Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides 32 fully staffed cots at Monash Children’s Hospital, Clayton. These intensive care beds are for sick and premature babies who are admitted from Monash Health hospitals or other hospitals soon after birth.
