The Dermatology Department at Monash Children’s Hospital treats children and adolescents with conditions of the skin, hair and nails in an inpatient or outpatient setting.
Dermatological conditions affecting children include eczema (dermatitis), birthmarks, warts and other minor skin infections, acne and alopecia areata (baldness or hair loss), as well as a broad range of rarer conditions that are either present at birth or develop later in childhood.
Our specialists have a particular interest and expertise in paediatric dermatology.
Some complex conditions require a multidisciplinary approach and this is provided through combined clinics such as the Genetic Skin Diseases Clinic that involves both dermatology and genetic specialists.
Our outpatient services include a Paediatric Eczema Clinic to cater for the increasing incidence of this common and often debilitating condition. The eczema clinic is overseen by an eczema nurse consultant who works closely with the dermatologists and junior medical staff. The service includes educational sessions for parents and training in the use of wet dressings and bleach baths. Please note the Dermatology Clinic does not provide services to test for possible food allergies as a cause of eczema.
Monash Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in Victoria that provides a patch testing service for children. Patch testing (which is different from skin prick testing) is a form of allergy testing that is used to confirm a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis ie. dermatitis due to an allergic substance touching the skin surface, such as a preservative in a cream.
