Monash Children’s Hospital:
Monash Health provides speech pathology services to Monash Children’s Hospital patients both in an acute setting within our hospitals and out in the community.
Acute Speech Pathology services
The Speech Pathology team at Monash Children’s Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient feeding and communication assessments/management. We treat children with acquired brain injuries, craniofacial anomalies (i.e. cleft lip and palate), respiratory conditions, developmental disorders (i.e. Autism Spectrum Disorder) and children born prematurely.
Videofluoroscopy is completed on site for the assessment of swallowing difficulties.
Referrals to the outpatient service at Monash Children’s Hospital will only be accepted from a medical source.
Community Speech Pathology services
Speech pathologists work with babies, toddlers and preschool children who are having difficulties in the development of their feeding and communication skills, which can include:
• Language delay/disorder – understanding instructions and using words in sentences.
• Articulation delay/disorder – pronunciation of sounds in words
• Dysfluency/stuttering – repeating sounds or syllables with effort
• Voice disorder – harsh or hoarse/husky voice
• Feeding issues

Eligibility
Children consulted in Monash Health public outpatient clinics and those discharged from an inpatient stay can be referred to the Speech Pathology outpatient clinic for assessment and review.
Inpatient speech pathology services are available across all Monash Children’s Hospital sites (Clayton, Dandenong and Casey).
Outpatient speech pathology services are available at Clayton and Casey sites.
