Updates: PICU and ELMHS Stepping Stones move day
Patients in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Early in Life Mental Health Service (ELMHS) Stepping Stones unit are moving from Monash Medical Centre to the new facilities at Monash Children’s Hospital today. Follow our progress here.
It has been an exciting and rewarding day for children’s health – we safely moved PICU and Stepping Stones into their new spaces at Monash Children’s Hospital.
It took just under three hours to complete the move, with dozens of staff involved in making the move a great success.
“The new Monash Children’s Hospital PICU is a great and wonderful step for Monash Health and, importantly, for the Victorian community that we serve. The opening of the new unit will allow doctors, nurses and allied health staff to care for some of the sickest children in Victoria in an environment that is designed for and dedicated to exactly this very special task,” said Dr Felix Oberender, Director Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
“Our staff are delighted to have a purpose-built, state-of-art unit, which offers a spacious, relaxing and friendly environment for adolescents and their families/carers. The new unit will complement the high quality care provided by our dedicated and passionate clinicians,” said Associate Professor Michael Gordon, Unit Head of ELMHS Child and Adolescent Stream.
Congratulations to everyone involved in today’s event, and thank you to our staff for their dedication and commitment to the relocation of our patients. Your efforts today are what helped to make the move so successful!

“We’re so excited it’s finally happening. We can’t wait to utilise the brand new state-of-the-art-unit and provide the highest quality of care. We love the new unit!” Said the team at Stepping Stones.
“The Mental Health Program is very excited about the opening of its brand new Stepping Stones Adolescent Unit as a replacement of its current facility. The unit is situated within the Monash Children’s Hospital and is designed and built specifically for addressing the needs of adolescents aged 13 to 17 years who require care in a mental health unit,” said Associate Professor Michael Gordon, Unit Head of ELMHS Child and Adolescent Stream.
