About us

Monash Children’s Hospital Ophthalmology Department provides acute and time-limited specialist services for the diagnosis, treatment and stabilisation of disorders of the visual system that are sight-threatening.

We see children with congenital or acquired eye problems, either as an isolated ophthalmic issue or part of a systemic condition.

Children are seen in our Outpatient clinics at Monash Medical Centre by consultant ophthalmologists, registrars and orthoptists.

Our registrars see children in the Emergency Department and those in-patients who require urgent ophthalmic assessment.

Referrals

Monash Children’s Hospital Ophthalmology Department is a tertiary specialist service.

The Ophthalmology Department is unable to undertake routine screening of common/chronic ophthalmic conditions and therefore these conditions should be referred to community eye healthcare providers (ophthalmologists).

All referrals MUST be accompanied by visual acuity where possible and meet the Monash Children’s Hospital Ophthalmology Department referral guidelines to be accepted for triaging.
