About us

Welcome to Monash Children’s Dandenong Special Care Nursery.

Our Special Care Nursery (SCN) is an eight bed high dependency unit.

If your baby has been admitted or transferred to the nursery for reasons explained to you by your doctor and nurse, they will be under the care of a hospital paediatrician.

We aim to provide family centred care to you and your baby during your stay in the nursery. We encourage you to participate as much as possible in your baby’s care when possible.

One of the four paediatricians who work at Dandenong Hospital will visit daily, usually between 8am and noon to review your baby’s progress. A paediatric registrar or resident is available in the hospital 24 hours a day.

The Nurse Unit Manager usually works Monday to Friday and is available throughout the day to discuss your baby’s nursing care and treatment or any concerns you may have, and specialised neonatal nurses are on staff to provide care 24/7.

Please do not hesitate to ask nursing or medical staff any questions regarding the care of your baby.

Hand washing

Hand washing is essential every time someone enters the nursery to help protect these vulnerable babies. The pink hand solution may also be used if hands are not soiled.

Visiting hours

Visiting hours for parents are open and parents are encouraged to call and visit whenever they desire. Please let staff know when you can come in to feed, bath or spend time with your baby so you can be involved with your baby’s day-to-day care. Visitors are welcome but they need to be accompanied by you. In the absence of parents, visitors without a visitor’s card won’t be able to see your baby. Due to limited space and respect for the other families, only two visitors at a time are permitted for each baby (excluding parents). Your baby’s siblings are most welcome to visit for a short duration, with supervision.

We ask that parents and visitors respect the privacy of all the babies and families. Please do not wander, touch or ask about other babies.

Parents’ room

A parents’ room is available for you to spend time with your baby. The room is located within the nursery and is equipped for breastfeeding, expressing, bathing and cuddling your baby. This is a quiet area for baby and family and visitors are restricted to two per baby due to limited space. A TV in the parents’ room can be used for leisure and educational purposes. Please ensure you are considerate of others when watching TV. Coffee, tea and juice are available in the nursery for parents and siblings only. Food can be purchased at the café or kiosk near the main hospital entrance. You may also bring your own food and use the fridge. Any hot drinks must have a cover on them.

Bonding rooms

We have two Bonding rooms for the use of mothers who are breastfeeding or for mothers of premature babies who are nearly ready to go home. This allows families to care for their own babies with the support of the SCN team. Sometimes they see it as a trial run before going home.
