About us

The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine looks after children with a wide range of disorders affecting breathing and sleep.

Our expert team of specialist physicians and allied health professionals is highly experienced in the investigation and management of these conditions in children of all ages.

We specialise in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of asthma, cystic fibrosis and long standing cough.

Our integrative cystic fibrosis centre is unique in Australia as it is the only place where patients with cystic fibrosis can be treated from birth to adulthood and receive continuity of care from specialist physicians without  the need to transition to a different hospital.

We are proud to offer Monash Children’s world class, highly specialised care in an environment that focuses on the child and family.

Lung function laboratory

We offer the complete range of diagnostic tests. This includes the busiest lung function laboratory in Victoria, and the Melbourne Children’s Sleep Centre, the only dedicated children’s sleep centre and sleep laboratory in the state.

Our department, in conjunction with Monash Imaging, has pioneered ultra-low dose CT examinations of the chest in children in Australia, reducing the radiation dose of this examination to as little as three standard chest X-rays.

Paediatric respiratory patients have access to inpatient beds at the new Monash Children’s Hospital, Clayton, and at Dandenong and Casey Hospitals.

Staff

The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Monash Children’s Hospital is led by Associate Professor David Armstrong.

Associate Professor Armstrong, Professor Nick Freezer, Dr Robert Roseby, Dr Marc Theilhaber, Associate Professor Gillian Nixon and Dr Angela McCullagh offer respiratory and sleep consultations. Associate Professor Margot Davey offers sleep consultations only.
